Keyword Density, Do You Know What It Is?

If you’re serious about designing your website to attract the search engines then keyword density is important.

What is it?Keyword density is the number of times the words or phrases that appear on a web page, as opposed to the actual amounts of words themselves. So if your page is 100 words long, you’ll have your keyword or several words in your content nine times. In the Google search engine, if your keyword is greater than 15% you may have a penalty for keyword stuffing. Keyword density is important since it influences both the amount and the usage of the words in the text.

5% – 15%

Any word used or used more frequently than 15% of the words on a web page is said to be keyword stuffed. Keyword stuffing is generally reserved for when the words are put in the content of the web page incorrectly or excessively. Proper keyword density should keep you within the optimal range and when you’ve got the density right, you’ve got to keep it.

Are there other factors?

Although the density of your keyword is important, other aspects of the web page also affect the rankings. Another factor is the number of quality of websites that link to your website. For instance, if you’ve got several million free classified ads, which you’ve got no control over, Google may decide that your website is popular and should be added to its index. Free classified ads are typically on a page titled “RelatedLinks.” On average, you’ll find ten free classified ads per day. If you’ve got several million of these, Google will like your website. That’s cheap advertising! What more can you ask for?

What about “Ask”?

If you can match your keyword to actual real searches, you’ll stand a good chance of getting noticed by the Ask engine. Remember, “ask” is Google’s actual name for itself. When the Ask optimizer makes his queries, he’s looking for information. If your site can provide him with more information than it’s worth, you’ll rank higher than the alternatives.

Where do you start?

You’ll want to tackle the basics. When you first develop a site you should:

-Choose keywords carefully- Create page titles that are constructed in such a way that they will be interpretable and attention grabbing.- Obtain inbound links from other sources. Both internal and external links are important- And don’t forget to use your keywords within the page title’s relevance.

Step 2: Metatags are your friends!

When you hear the term “meta tag”, you’re likely to think of the HTML tags that are designed to help search engines index your website. You’ve got a few meta tags that really don’t do anything, but of course they don’t hurt.

The Title meta tag is worn out by the search engine robots. They look at your title and use it to help them determine what your web page is about. They also use it in the SERPs (search engine results pages) to help customers determine which search engine sites to go to based on their search queries. For example, a customer would beBottomright when they want to look up shipping addresses for a product or service. A business will use top shipping companies as a reference when they’re building their site. All the search engine marketing in the world will not help if your site doesn’t have a shipping address that’s relevant to the product or service that’s being sold.

The Description meta tag is a short description of your web page. When the search engine robots crawl your site, they’ll look at your description and use it in the SERPs. If it’s not compelling enough, they’ll ignore it completely, relegate it to the dustbin.

The Keywords meta tag is the place where you list your keywords. The keywordsAreal hook in your web copy, and you want to use them often. The trick is to judiciously use the keyword phrases, but never to stuff them in. You can’t stuff a keyword phrase because a search engine will see it as keyword spamming and penalize you for it.

The alt tagsUse alt tags to picture your images. It provides a visual description of the image or graphic. It also makes your site more accessible to text-only browsers and visually impaired site visitors. These alt tags are another place where you can optimize your site; the search engines will see these as well.

Step 3: Get linked and the links keep flowing

If you’ve got a website and the majority of your links are coming from other related websites, the search engines will notice and will rank you higher in the SERPs. Stick to a 3-9 percent keyword density and you’ll get there in no time.
